Fruit Haiku
Ontario summer fruit
seven ripe syllables
so little time
Like Ontario summer fruit, the CanWest Cabaret Festival came and went too quickly (Oct. 2-5 at the Young Centre), and those who enjoyed it can't wait 'til next year. Audiences were treated to a rare collection of Canadian musicians performing, collaborating, co-inspiring and/or taking in one another's shows.
There were several glowing reviews for Queen of Puddings Music Theatre, in which four of the songs I wrote lyrics for were included, culminating in a final performance at the Four Seasons Centre. The Globe and Mail's Robert Everett-Green devoted an entire paragraph to reflect on my song, Asparagus Pee, which he said "...proved that cabaret could be at home in the bathroom, and reminded me that one major attraction of cabaret for contemporary classical composers is that it lets you do something in a popular idiom without appearing to be slumming..."
To What I Am Up
My feature-length comedy, Guitarded, is being optioned by Bits & Pieces Picture Co. (producer Rajiv Maikhuri), with director Srinivas Krisha (Masala) attached. Guitarded is a west-meets-east musical slacker comedy set in Thailand and Singapore, with strong international commercial
potential. Think: Flight of the Conchords meets Harold & Kumar. In other words, not your typical Canadian kinda flick. Which is why I'm thrilled to be working with these innovative, internationally experienced filmmakers.
I've been working on two new articles for Chatelaine magazine. The one I co-wrote with my buddy Ellen Vanstone will appear in their Holiday 2008 issue, due out mid-November. The latest one - TBD 2009. You can browse some of my previously published pieces on my articles page.
I'm pitching my new comedy series, Members, to TV networks... and at the same time meeting with interested parties re: shooting an independent pilot to avoid DH (Development Hell). I'm learning Final Cut Pro for my feline webisode series Fluffy Kittens. Stay tuned - can't wait to let the kittens play on the information superhighway.
I'm eagerly awaiting broadcast of the episodes I wrote for Global TV's new animated adult comedy series, Producing Parker. Apparently the show will air in January 2009.
And yes, I'm still working on a book proposal for my literary agent, Rupert Heath. Why? Why do you ask? Seriously. Do you think I'm failing or something?
